our history
Freedom International School: In Brief
- The school was founded in 2018 to meet the educational needs of 13-21 year olds, mostly immigrants and refugees from war-torn, impoverished countries.
- The students often arrive at Freedom International School far behind in reading, writing , and mathematics.
- The teachers work diligently to bring students to a level that allows them to graduate from high school and access further education and employment opportunities.
- The teaching approach is customized for each student, depending on their needs.
- The school is now housed at Mission Baptist Church in Winnipeg, having moved after its first year of operation.
- For its first two years, Freedom International School was fully funded by donors. Partial funding from the Province of Manitoba began in year 3. Sustained donor support is required to meet the unique social and educational needs of our student body, beyond the delivery of the provincial curriculum.
- In 2018, FIS had only 16 registered students. As of June, 2022 a total of 15 students have graduated from Freedom International School.
- As of 2022/23 the school has registered 42 students, 12 teaching staff, 10 weekly volunteers, 7 expected graduates, and works with 16 community organizations.
